Durham University Mooting Society: legal discourse, mock trials, competetive debating.
Mooting is the art of debating within a legal setting. A moot is the mock appeal hearing of a fictional legal case. Participants assume the role of counsel for either the appellant or the respondent and present their arguments to a judge. Courtroom etiquette is followed.
The Mooting Society will help you to improve your oratory skills; predominantly focusing on clarity of expression and precision of argument. Research skills and confidence in public speaking are also heavily developed. Mooting is a fantastic addition to your CV, particularly in the ever more competitive legal sphere.
We provide workshops (beginner, intermediate and advanced); seminars; excursions; and entry into both internal and external competitions. Networking events are a great opportunity to meet legal professionals and like-minded students. Furthermore, we are a point of contact with the Bar; holding frequent talks and conferences with distinguished practitioners.
Our members undertake pro bono (legal volunteering) work at a local Sixth Form, where we assist students in their preparations for the National Bar Mock Trial Competition.
In competing internally and externally we believe we have had some wonderful achievements of which we are very proud. Notwithstanding, we are continuously looking to expand. Consequently, we are aiming to enter international mooting competitions in the coming year, and build greater links with other Universities and the local community.
Please do not hesitate to get in contact if you would like more information or would be interested in collaborating with us in the future.
